Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the ultrastructure of liver cells (hepatocytes) showing how the cytoplasm is filled with organelles and inclusions reflecting the metabolic activities of liver cells. Mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum and glycogen are in abundance. At the membrane interfaces between the central hepatocyte and those at upper left and right are several small rounded discontinuities. These are tiny tunnel-like passageways for the flow of bile produced by the liver and are referred to as bile canaliculi. Magnification: x3, 300 when printed at a width of 10cm. | |
