| CRISPR Cas9 protein in a complex with both guide ribonucleic acid (RNA) and invading deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), molecular model. The CRISPR immune system, used by bacteria to combat foreign nucleic acids, copies and inserts segments of invading nucleic acid between sets of repeating DNA spacers in its own genome. Cas9 is a CRISPR DNA nuclease that uses a segment of CRISPR guide RNA (orange) as a template to recognize a strand of invading foreign DNA (purple). The HNH (green) and the RuvC (blue) lobes of Cas9 are responsible for cutting the foreign DNA strands. The helical lobe of Cas9 (grey), which includes several domains of its own, appears to target and position the Cas9 DNA and RNA substrates. | |
