French lorry transporting low-enriched uranium hexafluoride (hex"") on the M25. Hex is a low- level radioactive solid substance transported in steel cylinders; it is extremely corrosive and potentially lethal (hex is the chemical which sank with the Mont Louis in 1984). This particular consignment had arrived from France via Newhaven and was on its way (via M1) to British Nuclear Fuels' factory at Springfields near Preston for conversion to uranium dioxide (from which nuclear fuel is made)." | |
