Female Berber (Sclerophrys mauritanica) toad. The Berber, or , toad is a large amphibian, up to 15 centimetres, with a very warty patterned skin. Colour and patterns are very variable, but this female is very well marked with outlined red brown blotches and spots. The warts, or tubercles, cover the upper body and legs. The swellings behind the head are parotid glands and contain bufotoxin, a neurotoxin, which helps to protect it from predators. It is nocturnal and also active in twilight. Found mainly in North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia. |
