Smoke from domestic coal fires pours from chimneys on houses in the village of Kirkby Thore in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, UK. The smoke is being confined to a low level because of an inversion layer in the atmosphere, which is often a cause of smog. Although many towns and cities enforce smokeless zones, this was not the case in country villages at the time the image was captured. | |
