Snowshoe hare. View of a snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) sitting by melting snow. The snowshoe hare lives in woodland and forest edges throughout North America, apart from the southern USA. This white colouration develops in the autumn as camouflage in the snow. In the summer months, this hare is a light brown colour. They eat a wide variety of vegetation when available, but in the winter they may eat bark if food is scarce. Hares are typically solitary animals, and live alone in small burrows in their territories. The snowshoe hare is an important prey animal for a variety of carnivores, including the fox, lynx and weasel. | |
