A dome thermoformed in a sample of a polyetherimide resin. Thermoforming involves the sample being heated (in this case to 315 Celsius) in order to make it ductile. After the dome shape has been pressed into the polymer, it is allowed to cool. This particular polymer is a form of thermosetting plastic, where it will resist the further action of heat once set. Unlike other thermosetting polymers, however, it may also be further 'cured' to higher heat resistance by exposure to ultra-violet light. This polymer is being studied for a variety of applications in the aerospace industry. | |
