Glioma is a common brain cancer, comprising about 60% of all primary brain tumours that originate in the brain rather than being spread from elsewhere. Here, the tumour is at upper centre (black) in a cerebral hemi- sphere of the brain (red/yellow). Gliomas arise from glial cells which form the connective tissue of the brain. Brain cancers are dangerous because of nerve cell destruction and build-up of pressure as the tumour expands. Symptoms may include muscle weakness, and loss of vision or speech.
