Engineers building a railway tunnel under Mount Cenis in the French Alps. They used a 'special apparatus for using the force of compressed air in boring' introduced in 1861. The 48-mile-long Mont Cenis Pass Railway operated from 1868 to 1871 during the construction of the Frejus Rail Tunnel. To this day the tunnel remains an important link in the connection between Paris and Rome. From The Illustrated London News, February 13, 1869. This image has been coloured. | |
