South American Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) help to restore degraded Amazonian forest. They do this by inhabiting areas where slash and burn agriculture had been applied. When on these areas, they drop tree seeds in their scat. The South American Tapir can grow to a length of 1.8 to 2.5 m (5.9 to 8.2 ft) and attain a mass approximately 228 kg (about 500 lbs). This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, January 2019. | |
