Antiproton accumulator. Small ring of the antiproton accumulator (AA) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, near Geneva, Switzerland. The AA stacks"" bunches of antiprotons until they have reached a sufficient density and then injects them into the large Super-Proton-Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator where they are accelerated to energies of up to 540 GeV before being caused to collide head-on with protons travelling in the SPS in the opposite direction. The AA operates on a principle called ""stochastic cooling"", the invention of which won Simon van der Meer at CERN the Nobel prize for physics in 1984. Photographed in 1980." | |
