Light micrograph of the intermediate lobe, or pars intermedia, of a human pituitary gland. It is located between the anterior lobe (left) and the posterior lobe (right). In humans it is underdeveloped. It contains a series of vesicles and cysts that are the result of the fragmentation of the primitive Rathke's pouch, as well as nests of basophilic cells that extend towards the posterior lobe. This is the so-called basophilic invasion of the posterior lobe, a frequent change that appears in the human pituitary with age. | |
