Jacques Cartier (1491-1557). 1880 illustration of the French explorer Jacques Cartier discovering Canada in 1534. Cartier is best known for claiming what is now Canada for France. He sailed on three expeditions to North America in the period 1532 to 1542. He made maps of the Canadian coastline and sailed up a river that he named the Saint Lawrence. His discoveries laid the basis of France's claim to the new territory. He published an account of his travels in 1545. | |
