Light micrograph of a section through human soft tissue showing Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a rare type of soft tissue cancer. Kaposi's sarcoma develops from cells called endothelial cells, which line the blood and lymph vessels. It is most commonly found on the skin, but it can also affect the inside of the body, such as the lymph nodes, lungs, bowel, liver and spleen. The main cause of KS is a virus called human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV). It is thought that the virus infects the cells and causes them to become cancerous. | |
