Illustration showing a galaxy pulling in cool gas (orange) from its surroundings. Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers were able to observe a distant galaxy which was aligned with a more distant quasar (blue). The quasar's light passed through the galaxy's surrounding gas causing some wavelengths to be absorbed. As a result, astronomers were able to study the patterns of this absorption. They discovered that the galaxy pulled in cool gas using its gravitational pull. This supports the theory that galaxies pull in material to replenish depleted gas used to form stars. They use the material to continue to grow in size and form new stars. | |
