Solar system diagram. 18th-century diagram of the solar system and the orbits of the known planets, plus that of a comet (probably Comet Ikeya-Zhang). A note refers to the discovery in 1781 of the planet Uranus (here called Herschel after its discoverer). The signs of the zodiac are shown, with terrestrial and celestial globes, and a table of planetary data. This diagram was published in 'A Short Account of the Solar System and of Comets in General' (1789), with the inscription (bottom) naming Bartholomew Burges and dedicating it to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the State of Massachusetts and to the Philosophical Society of Pennsylvania. | |
