Satellite image of an oil spill (upper right) off the coast of Mauritius caused by the Japanese-owned ship, MV Wakashio. On 25th July 2020, the ship ran aground on a coral reef off the southeast coast of Mauritius. MV Wakashio leaked oil during the following weeks before breaking in half in mid-August and pumping over 1.2 million kilograms of oil into the Indian Ocean. This contaminated Mauritius's shoreline and lagoons and is believed to be Mauritius's worst environmental disaster. Image obtained by a Pleiades satellite on 16th August 2020. | |
