Pulsar J1846-0258 (white dot in blue centre), Chandra X-ray image. This is a young pulsar situated in the constellation Aquila in the supernova remnant Kes 75. Pulsars are a type of neutron star with strong magnetic fields that emit radio waves. Magnetars are another type of neutron star that have strong magnetic fields and emit other forms of radiation including outbursts of X-rays and gamma rays. Using the Chandra X-ray telescope, scientist observed Pulsar J1846-0258 emitting magnetar-like X-ray bursts that appeared brighter in X-ray images. Regular pulsars do not usually emit X-ray bursts. This X-ray image allows scientists to re-evaluate the relationship between magnetars and pulsars. | |
