The Red-bellied Root Lizard (Loxopholis parietalis) is a member of an interesting family of lizards characterized by, among other things, a translucent window on the eyelid. Their world is a sea of dead leaves on the rainforest floor through which they swim expertly by rapid undulation. Look for them at the edges of sunspots on the forest floor as they prowl by day in search of tiny insect prey. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru in 2018. | |
