The Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus) is a small primate found in tropical forests of South America's Amazon Basin. Divided into several species and subspecies (depending upon authorities) this little monkey has played a significant role in both the pet trade and medical research. Folks who are old enough will remember seeing ads in magazines featuring one of these monkeys seated in a coffee cup with the caption, Take me home! Of course, it was a bad idea, as was the massive harvest from an island colony in the Amazon for research purposes. Most populations today are stable and, owing to their small size, these primates are not hunted intensely as a food source. | |
