The Keel-bellied Shade Lizard (Alopoglossus atriventris) is a leaf litter inhabitant (microteid) found in the upper Amazon Basin. They are strongly sexually dimorphic, and males in breeding condition are colored boldly black and white. Primarily nocturnal, these little predators feed on a variety of insects and other small arthropods. I enjoyed the interactions I had with them as I photographed this pair. They were as curious about me as I was of them. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, January 2019. This is a male. | |
