Palpigrades are minute arachnids (related to whip scorpions, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, and spiders) - order Palpigradi. The individual depicted here is 1mm in body length (excluding its 'tail' the bristle covered flagellum). They have two main body segments and no eyes. They have been found in the soils of the tropics and subtropics but not exclusively. There are species known from temperate regions, particularly from caves. There are so far, give or take, 80 species from seven genera and two families. This specimen (Eukoenenia spelaea) was photographed in a cave in Slovakia. For their size, these tiny invertebrates are incredibly fast. Photographed in Slovakia, 2018. | |
