Larval fishes are common in midwater trawls. Many species have larval forms that live in the water column as they develop, feeding on the rich plankton community closer to the surface. This Large-tooth flounders or sand flounders (Paralichthyidae) was collected in a trawl between 200 meters depth and the surface in the Gulf of Mexico. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
