Glomerulus. Comparison between a scanning electron micrograph (SEM, left) and transmission electron micrograph (TEM, right) of a kidney glomerulus. Glomeruli filter waste products from the blood. This occurs through the narrow slits between interlocking pedicles - branching processes on the podocyte cells that encase the glomerular surface. In the TEM fenestrated endothelium lines the capillaries (containing red blood cells) and is separated from the podocytes by a basement membrane. After the reabsorption of certain substances, the fluid is transported to the bladder as urine. Tubules surround the glomerulus.. Magnification x300 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
