Sulfur agglomerate. The chemical element sulfur in or near volcanoes is precipitated from the fumes, gases and fluids as they escape from the active volcanoes. This example is from Ijen Volcano in East Java, Indonesia and owes its bulbous or grapelike (botryoidal) appearance to stalagmitic, post volcanic precipitation from percolating, sulphur-saturated waters in hollow spaces. Actual height of this sample is 110 mm. | |
