Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, light micrograph. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is a rare subtype of astrocytoma (WHO Grade II) that usually occurs in children and young adults. It has a predilection for temporal lobe and majority of the patients present with epilepsy. The tumour is usually well-circumscribed and frequently has solid and cystic components. This image shows spindle cells in intersecting fascicles admixed with gemistocyte-like cells, as well as a few highly pleomorphic astrocytes. Mitotic activity or necrosis are not seen, except in cases that have undergone malignant transformation (seen in 15% to 20% of cases). | |
