Montage of five images showing the progression of the partial lunar eclipse of 16-17 July 2019. Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Moon (the upper part here) is fully eclipsed, passing into the Earth's umbra. The rest of the Moon has dimmed as it passes into the Earth's penumbra (a phenomenon known as a penumbral eclipse). This eclipse was visible from large areas of Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, and South America. | |
