Lucy Branham (1892-1966), American suffragette, in prison uniform speaking at a meeting during the National Woman's Party 'Prison Special' tour in 1919. Branham had been imprisoned in the Occoquan Workhouse Virginia, USA, in 1917 for picketing outside the White House. Imprisoned suffragettes toured the country by train in 1919 raising awareness and support for women's suffrage. The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was ratified in August 1920 after nearly a century of protest. | |
