Kate Heffelfinger (1889-1958), US suffragette, wrapped in a blanket, after being released from the Occoquan Workhouse Virginia, USA. She had been sentenced to the workhouse for picketing outside the White House. While in jail she had joined a hunger strike and subsequently been force fed. The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was ratified in August 1920 after nearly a century of protest. Photographed circa 1917. | |
