Calcite, chemically a calcium carbonate (CaCO3), is the most important and widespread carbonate mineral on earth, the building material of limestone, marble, shells, coral and other. This picture shows calcite in crystalline form, rhombohedral crystals tainted orange red by presence of some iron in the crystal lattice. By their form and setting these crystals are referred to as 'dogtooth crystals'. Provenance is Eulalia in Mexico, actual width of sample is 190 mm. | |
