Illustration of a cross-section through a horse's foot. The outer layer (dark brown) is the hoof wall. It is made from layers of the protein keratin, the same protein that makes up hair and nails. It protects the underlying toe bones (cream). Beneath the hoof wall is the dermis (red), which contains blood vessels and nerves. At the back of the foot is the digital cushion (light orange), which acts as a shock absorber. Tendons (grey) anchor the foot bones to the lower leg muscles. | |
