Yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) on its hind legs. This animal usually assumes this bipedal stance when alert and on the lookout for predators or prey. The yellow mongoose is a social mammal that inhabits savannah and scrub in southern Africa. It lives in groups in complex burrows, emerging during the day to forage for food. It feeds mainly on insects, but can also take a wide variety of prey, including small mammals, birds and their eggs, reptiles and vegetation. Photographed in the Kgalagadi transfrontier park in Southern Africa. | |
