Pyrolusite is manganese oxide (MnO2) or hydroxide, formed by oxidation of weathered manganese minerals. It is the most common manganese mineral and is an important ore for this metal that is extensively used in steel and other alloys. This sample shows a habitat of intergrown radial-acicular pyrolusite crystals from Ilfeld in the German Harz Mountains. Actual width is 85 mm. | |
