A Goldsmith in his Shop, 15th century. The painting portrays the profession of goldsmithing. It is thought that the goldsmith is Willem van Vleuten, who worked for Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, who commissioned from van Vlueten a gift for Mary of Guelders on the occasion of her marriage to James II, King of Scots. It is thought that Mary and James are the couple depicted in this painting, buying a wedding ring that is being weighed on a scale. The painting is by Netherlandish artist Petrus Christus, and dates from 1449. | |
