Synlight solar research facility, illustration. This system consists of 149 xenon short-arc lamps (one shown in inset at upper right) that together produce a light intensity that is more than 10, 000 times that of ordinary sunlight. This is used for research into solar fuels and solar thermal power stations. The facility is operated by the DLR (German Aerospace Center) Institute of Solar Research in Germany, and was switched on in March 2017. A human figure at lower left shows the scale.
