Illustration of the view from the surface of a so-called Niven Ring, named for the science fiction author Larry Niven. To give its more colloquial term, it's often referred to as a Ringworld. This is a hypothetical megastructure around a star, constructed by a highly intelligent and technologically advanced alien civilization. The ring has a diameter comparable to the orbit of the Earth, and is around one million miles thick - a narrow band encircling the star. The surface of this 'world' captures far more energy from the star than a planet, with an effective surface area equivalent to several million times that of the Earth. |
