Earth's radiation belts, illustration. The Earth's radiation belts and its plasmasphere are shaped by Earth's dipole magnetic field. These structures protect the Earth from cosmic radiation and the solar wind. The radiation belts extend from an altitude of about 1000 to 60, 000 kilometres above the surface. The Earth's axis of rotation is shown in red, with the magnetic axis offset in blue. | |
