Burkitt's lymphoma, light micrograph. Burkitt's lymphoma is a highly aggressive B-cell neoplasm which often involves extranodal sites or presents as a leukemia. It consists of a monomorphic population of B-cells with basophilic cytoplasm and a high mitotic rate. Endemic variant is seen in sub-Saharan Africa and is associated with Epstein-Barr virus. It mainly affects young children. The most commonly involved sites are jaw, facial bones, and orbit. The image shows typical starry sky pattern in a classic Burkitt's lymphoma. The pattern is created by pale macrophages in a background of deep blue tumor cells. | |
