Femoral nerve block injection. Illustration of the bones, nerves and an artery of a hip, showing the injection of local anaesthetic to achieve a femoral nerve block. This is typically done prior to upper leg surgery. The anaesthetic will block the three nerves located in the groin, which serve the hip, front of the thigh and knee. A nerve block is often combined with a general anaesthetic. This allows the strength and amount of anaesthetic to be reduced, therefore reducing any risks associated with the drugs. It also provides longer-lasting pain-relief after the surgery than just a general anaesthetic alone. | |
