Femur neck fractures, illustration. This end of the femur (thigh bone) forms part of the hip joint, and it is the head and neck of the femur that typically fracture in injuries to the hip. At far right, the fracture is not visible, hidden behind the layers of ligaments and cartilage that form part of the joint. At left, the fracture is just below the head, known as a subcapital fracture of the femoral neck. At centre, is a transcervical fracture of the femoral neck. Other types of fractures are to the femoral head (ball-shaped) and the trochanter (the ridged area just below the femoral neck). For illustrations of different types of femoral fractures, see images C046/2997 and C046/2998. | |
