Scientist performing a virus plaque assay, to determine the amount of virus in cell culture isolates. A suspension of the virus is added to cells in culture. During the incubation, viral particles kill the cells they infect. The cells are stained, and the killed cells do not stain but form plaques, appearing as unstained areas. The plaques can be counted to determine the concentration in virus in the original suspension. | |
