Brian Paul Schmidt (born 1967), US-Australian physicist, with a diagram showing that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, work for which Schmidt shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. Schmidt obtained his doctorate in 1993 from Harvard University. He formed the High-Z Supernova Search Team at Harvard, but led the research from Australia. In 2011, Schmidt shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Perlmutter and Reiss for providing evidence that the universe's expansion is accelerating. Schmidt's observations of brightness and redshift of supernovae contradicted the previously held theory that the expansion of the universe was slowing down. Schmidt, elected Fellow of the Royal Society (2012), was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (2013). Photographed in 2012. | |
