Illustration of NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) which will study the universe from beyond the orbit of the Moon. WFIRST will have two instruments: The Wide-Field Instrument which is a near-infrared camera and The Coronagraphic Instrument which is a camera and spectrometer covering visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Data collected by The Wide-Field Instrument will aid the study of dark energy which is thought to be responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Data from The Coronagraphic Instrument will aid in the study of exoplanets, being able to detect planets only 0.1 arcseconds away from their host stars. | |
