Solar and lunar eclipses, illustration. At left is the Moon and the Earth as seen during a total solar eclipse, showing the Moon casting a shadow in the light (yellow) from the Sun. This shadow has a lighter component, the penumbra, and a darker component, the umbra. The penumbra is present in a partial solar eclipse (bottom image at centre left), and the umbra is present in a total solar eclipse (upper image at centre left), with the Sun's corona visible around the Moon. The centre diagram shows the rotation of the Earth (red arrow) and the path of the eclipse across the Earth's surface (dotted red line). During a lunar eclipse (right), the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun, and the Earth's shadow (umbra) is cast on the Moon. The red colour is due to the effect of sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere and being bent (refracted) and reddened before reaching the Moon. The resulting orange Moon is at top right.
