Pyramidal neuron (from top right to bottom left) and microglia cell (centre), illustration. Pyramidal cells, found in the brain, are so named for their triangular cell bodies. Each cell body has numerous processes (dendrites) that collect and transmit information from other nerve cells and sensory cells. Each cell body also has an axon leading from it, through which it passes information to other cells. Microglial cells are specialised macrophages located in the central nervous system. Also known as neuroglia, they are responsible for removing peptide fragments (plaques), damaged neurones and infectious agents from the central nervous system. |
