Candida yeast, illustration. C. albicans and C. auris are two pathogenic yeasts that cause infections known as candidiasis. C. albicans is found in the gut, mouth and genital tract of around 40-60 % of adults. It can become pathogenic, causing candidiasis, which includes thrush. C. auris is found on the skin of humans. If internalised, C. auris can cause infections of the bloodstream, the respiratory system, the central nervous system and internal organs, as well as the skin. Infection can be fatal. C. auris is often resistant to multiple anti-fungal treatments. |
