Bisphenol A molecule, illustration. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic organic compound that contains two hydroxyphenyl groups (red at top right and pink at centre). It is colourless and poorly soluble in water. BPA is a starting compound for the synthesis of a range of plastics, including drink bottles and food containers. Because BPA shows hormone-like properties, there is debate around its suitability in consumer products. | |
