Pulsar wind nebula, X-ray and radio image. This cloud of gas expanded rapidly outward when the star in its centre went supernova and turned into a pulsar. The appearance of the expanding cloud is caused by the pulsar pushing the gas outward in bulges, creating what is known as a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). This image combines data from the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Image observations made in 2006, using C-band emissions for the radio image. | |
