NGC 7714 spiral galaxy, imaged by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys. NGC 7714 is a spiral galaxy 100 million light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Pisces. The golden halo is made of Sun-like stars that have been pulled deep into space by an ongoing merger with a smaller galactic companion NGC 7715 (outside the frame of this image). The encounter with this nearby galaxy has compressed interstellar gas to trigger bursts of star formation, seen as bright blue arcs extending around NGC 7714's centre. | |
