Joseph Pawsey (1908-1962), Australian radio astronomer. Pawsey worked on developing advanced radar instrumentation during World War II at Australia's Radiophysics Laboratory. After the war, the discoveries of radio waves coming from the Sun inspired him to use the instrumentation to observe the skies. He and his team used innovative methods for increasing the resolution of these antennas. Pawsey discovered that sunspots are the sources of non-thermal radio waves from the Sun. He and his team made a catalogue of radio 'stars' (actually galaxies). He was appointed Director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in 1962 but died of a brain tumour before taking on the role. | |
